Chapter 10
Lena was thrilled the next day when she was told the offer she had written for Alice and Leo had been accepted. She called to tell them, and quickly set up the home inspection. Cord called later in the afternoon to suggest she join them for supper again, as once again, there was something he wanted to talk to them about.
She hurried home to change, and was at Cord's ranch about the same time he and Tucker were coming in to eat. Once they were seated he wasted no time getting to the point. “Brad found nothing in the attic today, and the rooms are all the size shown in the original plans. We've hit another dead end. I've been hoping one of you have come up with another possibility?”
It was obvious by the silence that no one had. Lena was the first to speak. “Apparently not. How about your cousin, the private detective? Have you heard from him?”
“His name is Chad Martin, and yes, I did hear from him. He looked into it today. He got all the info he could from the papers in the area. He called a friend, who's going to talk to a friend, and he's hoping to get a copy of the police file, or at least most of it, in the next day or two. He's gone out asking questions of a few people, as well, and he thinks it's worth looking into. It's still an open case, though it's labeled inactive. His sources are saying it was rather strange from the start, and the police basically said there's not much to go on and didn't do an overabundance of investigating.”
“At least that's hopeful,” Lena said.
“It is, but don't get your hopes up too much,” Cord warned. “He would like to talk with you and get any information you can give him, and some background on the family.”
“Sure. I'll answer anything I can,” she assured him. “I'll try and remember that time frame and see if I can come up with anything that will help.”

The next day at work Lena met a couple that went to the office looking for someone to list their house with. The receptionist was on the phone, so Lena went to talk to the couple. “Good morning. Isn't it nice outside today?” she said as she approached.
“Good morning,” the gentleman said. “It's beautiful out. This is my favorite time of the year for that reason. We get days like this.”
“Is this normal for around here this time of year?” Lena asked.
“Absolutely,” the lady said. “I take it you aren't from here?”
“I just moved here from the opposite end of the state. It's not this warm over there, and wetter this time of year normally. I thought we were just being extremely lucky this year. If you say this is normal, though, I like it!” They got into a conversation about where exactly she was from, and discovered they have some mutual acquaintances.
“That is so cool,” Lena said.
